Merriams turkey historically were present in the plains states but were extirpated from Nebraska in 1915. However, in 1959 the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission commenced re-introductions of wild turkey into the State. Stock was comprised of both Merriams subspecies and hybrid Merriams/Rio Grande stock. Populations became established and by the turn of the century, large winter flocks of 100 or more birds were not uncommon. Today, numbers are at an all time high and, similarly, the probability of bagging a turkey in either spring or fall is high.

The Seasons
Spring 2007 wild turkey season in Nebraska opens on April 14th and runs through May 20th. The 2007 season is different from most previous years that contained, split early and late seasons. In 2007, in southeast Nebraska, turkey populations have resulted in . unlimited permit availability . More importantly, during this five-week season a hunter may bag up to 3 toms!

A maximum of four hunters can be provided lodging within the house. Most of the 2,000 acres of Nebraska Hunting land is within a 3-mile radius of this Nebraska Hunting Outfitters enterprise. Some land is walking distance from the site. Nebraska Pheasant Hunting is always good and populations depend on spring hatching success in June.

The Setting
Hunters Hole is a newly founded Premier Hunting Guide Service that has access to several thousand acres of optimum wooded areas interspersed with croplands and pasture. The Hole is located in southeast Nebraska in Lewiston, Pawnee County. It is owned and operated by John and Mary Rinne. John has hunted turkey for years in Arizona and more recently in his home state of Nebraska. He has bagged multiple birds in both spring and fall seasons. John grew up in Nebraska hunting upland game, rabbits and squirrels and has hunted these species over the past 50 years. Big game species such as wild turkey and deer were rare to absent in the l960s and 1970s in southeast Nebraska. While guiding hunts in fall 2006 flocks of over 50 birds were commonly observed during upland game and deer hunting activities. In early December 2006, John observed 150 birds fly off of one roost on lands that are accessible by Hunters Hole clients. Hunt rates and pages are contained on the website, and because of the novelty of the business, custom hunts and discounts are negotiable.

The Sensation
Although spring turkey season is the next season, fall turkey hunting from mid October to the end of December can be equally successful and is easily combined with both upland game bird species and white tail deer. For those of you who have hunted turkey for years, you know the thrill and excitement. For those who are novices or have never hunted this wiley, uncooperative, big game species, but have always considered it, enter “the matrix.” Come and experience waiting motionless, often for up to a half hour. Do so in absence of creating even the slightest noise except for the artificial, pleading mimics of a hen turkey emitted by your box or diaphragm call. Do this, while a boisterous, gobbling tom turkey either continually and raucously gobbles and rapidly approaches you, or alternatively goes silent and sneaks in from an unknown direction and exposes your futility. A spring gobbler looking for a hen has hearing and sight capabilities beyond what we can imagine and is impregnated with a complete lack of curiosity for any motion or sound created by a hunter. I once heard on a turkey calling tape two long-time turkey hunters make what I consider a bottom line statement “If a turkey could smell, you would never bag one!” Indeed, spring wild turkey hunting is a thrilling and I would venture to say, a perhaps unequaled challenge in big game hunting.
